OR a facilitator of the discovery of knowledge?) - Enabling my students to make sense of the world (Read. Listen. Discuss. Debate. Decide. Revisit decisions. Revise them. Revise them again. Now THAT is critical thinking.) - Meta-cognition (Reflecting on HOW we learn, WHY we learn, WHAT we've learned) - Awareness of the growth mindset (reflect on how we were able to learn English effortlessly as babies: apply that to French) - Not forgetting nature as we leap and bound towards technology integration for 21st-century skill-sets. -accommodating the individuality of students' learning styles ("You don't hafta be perfect. Ya just gotta work hard!") - Creating a sense of personal and social responsibility, including civic awareness (Don't like what you see in the world? About Mme JarvisBonjour! I am a recent graduate of the Master's in Educational Leadership program at SFU Harbour Centre, with a focus on dialogue and rebuilding relationships in the context of BC's K-12 education system. My capstone project focused on qualitative analysis of a professional learning community (Communities of Practice) for TTOCs. I currently teach Regular and French Immersion Social Studies 8, 9 and 10 at a new interdisciplinary-vision school called École Salish Secondary School in Cloverdale, Surrey. I graduated from the French PDP Programme de Formation Professionnel (B.Ed.) at Simon Fraser University in 2011. I taught English, French and French Immersion as a TTOC from 2012-2016, and my days varied greatly from one another. I have also taught ELL at an English camp in Seoul, South Korea on two separate occasions. I love the spontaneity of my job and I find my relationships with students very rewarding. I believe in in-depth learning, experiential learning, project-based learning, and building community and strong relationships with students and colleagues. I was a late French Immersion student from grades six to twelve and graduated with my dual-language Dogwood certificate before beginning general studies at SFU. I am also a certified DELF exam facilitator for levels A1, A2, B1 and B2. I completed my Intensive French education certificate during a weeklong training in Saskatoon during the summer of 2016. During high school I was very involved in my school community, and participated in music and dance programs as well as being highly involved in the student council. I do my best to attend my students' shows and concerts to show them that I support their passions, and I myself have a passion for philanthropy, socio-political activism and community. I completed my B.A. at SFU in 2009 in English Literature and French Language and my B.Ed. in 2011 in French Education with a minor in Curriculum and Instruction. During my studies at SFU I worked at a restaurant to pay my tuition, and I saved up in order to have the opportunity to study abroad on three separate occasions: Prague, Czech Republic (2007) - Philosophy, History, Political Science; Tours, France (2009) - History, Political Science, French Literature; and Prato, Italy (2010) - Italian Language, Art History, Literature. As a result, I have traveled to many European countries. I love to learn new languages and experience new cultures, and I was lucky to be chosen as a participant for the Explore French program in Québec City in 2012, and the Taglit-Israel Birthright experience in 2014. I took the spring of 2010 off from school to pursue a position with the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, volunteer in local secondary schools and prepare for my application to the French PDP programme at SFU. I very much enjoyed my long practicum experience at Burnsview Secondary in North Delta. I chose to teach on-call for a number of years in both Surrey and Delta. I am a staff rep and I currently sit on one Executive Committee; The BC Early Career Teachers' Association (Co- Vice-President: www.bcecta.ca). I am also an active member of the B.C. Join us for a conversation with writer and educator, Dr. Clint Smith, where we will hear his poetry and reflections on working for justice, equity, and civic agency in our schools. Dr. Clint Smith is a writer, teacher, and Emerson Fellow at New America. He is the author of the poetry collection, Counting Descent, and the forthcoming nonfiction book How the Word is Passed. His writing has been published in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review and elsewhere. He received his B.A. from Davidson College and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
Sarah Stuart is a Senior Program Associate who provides site-based coaching for teachers implementing Facing History and plans and facilitates workshops and seminars each year. Prior to joining the Facing History staff, Sarah taught the Facing History Elective and AP Psychology for five years at a legacy Memphis City School. She received her B.A. in Humanities and Psychology from the New College of California and an M.A. in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership at the University of Memphis.
Sarah Shields is a Senior Program Associate in the Chicago office of Facing History and Ourselves. Prior to joining Facing History in 2013, she served as an assistant principal and nationally board-certified high school social studies teacher in Chicago Public Schools. Sarah's work in CPS focused on drop-out prevention, successful matriculation to high school, and cross-cultural relationships in schools. INDIGENOUS Settler-Indigenous Relations - Bruce Miller, UBC professor - STA Convention 2021 via Zoom Friday May 7th 2021 "Participants will learn about the history of contact between the settler population and Indigenous peoples, with an emphasis on our immediate area and the Coast Salish peoples of British Columbia. This history includes the use of gun ships to pacify villages and exclusion from parts of cities. But it also includes innoculation programs established by the HBCo. I will use a powerpoint to show images for my talk and participants are free to ask questions. I will include details from my own research with Coast Salish communities over the last forty years and in giving expert testimony in human rights tribunals and courts regarding treaties, fisheries, and other issues. I also consider repatriation and reconciliation. In addition, I address key questions which people may ask, such as "what tools do instructors need to discuss and clarify these questions in a coherent and respectful manner?" and "What is the importance of status and why is there status? Does it mean people with status have special rights?"
Mining in BC - A (secondary) resource unit designed for students in Social Studies, Geography, Earth Science and Geology. - Kiloh, David / Pavan, Kim - STA Convention 2021 via Zoom Friday May 7th 2021 This workshop will be an online presentation of the recently developed, teacher-written learning resource on one of our provinces main industries. This programme addresses many of the big ideas and core competencies of the current BC curriculum for Social Studies, Geography, Earth Science and Geology. For example in the the unit, as well as learning about mining, students will be challenged to address environmental, cultural (eg. First Nations) and ethical implications associated with mine development in our province. The culmination of the unit is the process surrounding community engagement within a student role play that includes all the stakeholders. "Directly connected with the BC Social Studies and English Langauge Arts curriculum, this workshop will share an ongoing project using the graphic narratives, co-created with Holocaust survivors, as the foundation for teaching materials.
The study of genocides help students think about the use and abuse of power, and the roles and responsibilities of individuals, nations, and states when confronted with issues of social justice and human rights violations. Teaching through testimony interjects personal, palpable emotion into the telling of history and disrupts the flow of typical historical narratives. These eyewitness accounts give a face and a voice to victims, to which students can relate. It helps students to grasp the reality of an unreal event. Testimonies help to demonstrate the human and personal dimension of history without dramatizing the effects of historical events on survivors.
As a society, we have to prepare ourselves for a time when survivors will no longer be able to visit classrooms or meet with students. While it is impossible to replace the influential experience of hearing a Holocaust survivor, the powerful use of testimony can inspire students. A survivor’s testimony is not simply a recollection or story, students become stewards of history – entrusted with the knowledge of someone else’ experience.
This project uses Holocaust survivor testimonies as the foundation for graphic narratives. These graphic narratives are the center of adaptable and flexible educational resources, created by teachers. "At Insight Global Education, storytelling is at the heart of what we do. We foster global citizenship in youth through in-school, community-based and international experiential education. We believe that in order to begin making change in the world, you must first understand it’s intricacies. Through simulation and game-based curriculum, relationship building opportunities, and meaningful community experiences, we believe that the power of story can shape future leaders.This workshop will first highlight the two key ways that Insight has made experiential sustainable development education more accessible to teachers; through game-based curriculum and community-engaged learning. We will then explore the power of diverse narratives, community connection and gamification as tools to teach complex concepts like climate justice, and social inequality.
Workshop attendees will take part in an immersive, virtually compatible exercise to showcase how gamification can bring social justice learning to life with storytelling and empathy. We will also review how educators can engage community based organizations here in Metro Vancouver, allowing them to contextualize local social issues for their students.
