In general, and unlike English, MOST french adjectives are placed after the noun they describe. Here are a few adjectives that illustrate this difference with English.
une maison blanche (a white house > a house white!)
un visage intéressant (an interesting face > a face interesting!)
des gâteaux délicieux (delicious cakes > cakes delicious!)
In these examples, the adjectives are blanche (white), intéressant (interesting), and délicieux (delicious). Simple to remember, right?
Now you need to know that NOT all adjectives go after. We made up a trick to help you remember:
AAA = All Adjectives go After EXCEPT BAGSO (Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size, Order)
BAGSO - These adjectives go BEFORE the person or thing you're describing.
(Print the notes from here: Click here)
Practice worksheet & answer key - click here
BAGSO adjectives go before: BAGSO is a trick to help you remember the following:
B Beauty (Beautiful, handsome, etc.) Voici la belle femme! (belle describes la femme)
A Age (Old, young) Voici la vielle femme! (vielle = old)
G Goodness (Good / Bad) Voici la mauvaise pizza! (Here is the bad pizza)
S Size (Big / small / medium) Voici le grand chien. (Here is the big dog)
O Order (First, second.... last) Voici la dernière personne! (Here is the last person)
So, here it is again: The BAGSO trick helps you remember what kind of adjectives go BEFORE nouns.
(Get it? BAGSO and BEFORE both start with the letter B!)
B for beauty: beau (beautiful), joli (pretty)
A for age: jeune (young), vieux (old), nouveau (new)
G for goodness: bon (good), meilleur (better), mauvais (bad), gentil (kind)
S for size: petit (small), haut (high), gros (fat)
O for order: premier/première, deuxième, troisième, quatrième, dernier/dernière...
AAA (All other Adjectives go After)
Example: Voici la belle chemise rose.
Voici le grand chien énergique.
Try to translate these:
I live in Surrey with my beautiful, sporty sister.
I love to eat big delicious pizzas! (pizza is feminine)
There are five nice people in my energetic family.
Now watch the BAGSO videos below! The answers for the English sentences are below the videos.
