What an amazing weekend. I'm truly grateful to Victoria Olsen and Naryn Searcy for presenting such fabulous sessions. I really think the skills I've learned from Victoria about Screencasting are going to help me work more efficiently at promoting the new BC Early Career Teachers' Association as well as the existing BC Association of Teachers of Modern Languages. As for Naryn's session... wow. It hit home in a big way. I need to catch up on my sleep but I will come back to blog about it more, but look at all of the ideas I already have about what I want to do with Experiential learning and Indigenous Perspectives in highschool French Immersion and Core French. I'm very lucky to have a mentor teacher Rachel Hare who validates my ideas and gets just as excited to share her ideas with me, and I can't wait to talk to Rachel about Naryn's session, since she wasn't at the Whistler conference with me.
Learning how to Screencast with Victoria Olsen | ^My Sunday notes once I got back home and started brainstorming Experiential adventures I could do with my students. <^Photos & notes from Naryn Searcy's 2.5 hr session about the English First Peoples courses she runs for grades 10-12 in the Okanagan-Skaha district. |
I'm starting a new 'Parking Lot' for a blog roll that I'm adding to gradually. Naryn's and Victoria's, along with that of Naryn and Victoria's districts, are the first to be added. My brain is always so full of ideas and good intention to go back to these sites. For now it reassures me to know I have this parking lot, and I'm going to try extra hard to find podcasts and audio books which my sources of inspiration recommend so I can listen to them during my 45 minute commute to and from school.

Langley recently hosed Edcamp35 and I was heartened by their superintendent's humble attendance and participation.

I currently teach in two great districts; both which have done some pretty cool hiring lately in terms of promoting change-makers and innovation. Technology allows us to leverage our capacity in new ways, and sharing our questions and practices is easier now more than ever with Twitter hashtag chats and blogs.
Delta has a awesome learning blog here called "180 days of learning"
Surrey has a tonne of teachers (5000!) and I've only begun to start combing through them. Off the top of my head:

Surrey has a tonne of teachers (5000!) and I've only begun to start combing through them. Off the top of my head:
- Joe Tong is our District Communicating Student Learning helping teacher, and I find out about more Pro-D in my district from his Twitter feed than from any other source. He's pretty awesome, not to mention his dog Judith is SO CUTE.
- Superintendent Jordan Tinny's blog "Ed Praxis" - the fact that my superintendent encourages us to move away from letter grades and towards more meaningful feedback and reporting is a huge reassurance to me. I have a lot of anxiety about representing my students' learning with numbers and letters... it simply doesn't sit well with my values or morals as an educator. Knowing that I am encouraged to use portfolio-based assessment by leaders in my district is huge. I like that I can download his Podcasts to listen to later in my car. - @bcedchat and @lanchatPLN - I set automatically recurring reminders on my phone for #BCedchat and #langchat so that an automatic notification pops up about 20 minutes beforehand. My cousin's partner D'Alice is one of the regular moderators for BCEdchat, and Coquitlam Japanese teacher/ BCATML member Colleen Lee-Hayes is a moderator for Langchat :) Colleen's website is a serious jackpot of effective methods for language instruction and metacognitive teaching practices. It's cool to know people who are so passionate about innovating and sharing!

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I want to show this towards the end of June during class, as an inspirational motivation to my students to spend 20 hours over the summer to learn something new.
